When you have to make a decision, how much time do you spend trying to get it perfect? Do you spend too much time worrying about getting the small things right? Or are you the impulsive type and dive in without any research and ‘buy on sight’? Perhaps you’re the kind of person who is able to make big decisions but is paralysed by what to order in a restaurant?
One thing I have learned is that there are many types of decision makers and many ways of deciding on things. Each have their merits and they’re down sides. What’s important is to be able to know what type you are and work with what you have, in order to avoid wasting time and energy. Many people put too much pressure on themselves to maximise the outcome, to make the ‘best / right’ decision. Invariably they are not satisfied with the result because there is no perfect answer. Who drives the perfect car, who has the perfect relationship or the perfect job? Yet many people waste so much time on decisions that have no impact on their overall happiness.
What we can do is ask ourselves ‘how important is this decision, how will my life change after I make this decision’? You might find that things are not as important as you thought they were. Give the process an appropriate amount of time, make your decision and then accept that decision.
What you do with all the extra time you’ll have on your hands is down to you. Me? I’m off to play some golf!!
